Barcelona, cradle of the labor movement.
On the occasion of the commemoration of September 11, 2024, Dr. Teresa Abelló i Güell delivered a lecture at the Barcelona City Hall.
Dr. Abelló, a member of this chair and a former pupil of Professor Josep Termes, is today one of the leading specialists on the labor movement in Spain, and more specifically in Catalonia, and the international relations it maintained. The lecture focused on the birth of the labor movement and labor internationalism in Spain, with Barcelona as its main stage. It covered the period from the beginning of discussions on labor activism in the 1840s, when industry began to grow significantly, and the first labor societies were formed, up to 1874, with the end of the First Republic. Dr. Abelló pointed out in her lecture the historical resilience of labor organizations in facing political challenges and their capacity to form successive organizations. We offer the video of the lecture and the text in PDF format.
